Chris had put down compost and seed. It made the weeds really happy. It became a toss-up as to whether the new grass would be killed my mowing, or by the shade of the very happy weeds.
Always bet on the very happy weeds. I'm learning to love weeds which makes gardening so much easier. If I was making all the decisions about my lawn, I'd turn it into 100% dwarf Dutch white clover -- or as close as I could get. It grows only 4-6 inches -- I'd never mow it. And the bees would be so happy. Barefoot lawn-puttering would be risky however, so doing it with small tykes about might not be such a great idea.
